TransportationAirThere are airports in all major areas of Egypt and domestic flight are reasonably short and reasonably comfortable - just slightly expensive. RailEgypt has an extensive (though ageing) rail network, and if you are using the express trains, have a very good safety record. Their problems tend to be with the older stock used for third class and goods trains. The best trains have names like Turbini and Spanish - which tend to reflect the country who donated the equipment and/or expertise to operate the trains. Using the express service from Cairo to Alexandria, the journey is only two hours and costs each way are(Jan 2006) EGP32 first class, EGP26 second class air conditioned, and EGP22 second class without air conditioning. I have never bought a third class ticket, so cannot comment on that price. Those fares are the equivalent of GBP 3.20m 2.60 and 2.20 respectively. In first class, the porter comes round offering coffee, tea and sandwiches on the southbound trains (at a price), and on the evening northbound, you have opportunity to buy dinner. This is similar in content, packaging and quality to an airline meal. There is an overnight sleeper service between Alexandria - Cairo - Luxor which takes approximately 12 hours for the entire journey and costs each way $56 per adult (children over 12 same price) based on two sharing a cabin Cairo - Luxor and $72 per adult (same condition) Alexandria - Luxor. There is a service Port Said - Cairo, Port Said - Alexandria - Marsa Matrouh which allows you to see a good deal of the Suez Canal and of the North Coast. BusExpress services (SuperBus) are frequent from Cairo - Alexandria, and are reasonably comfortable. These are air conditioned luxury travel coaches, with catering, toliets and television (though unfortunately the television tends to be tuned to a local aeabic station, so of little interest to the visitor). Journey times are three hours each way, and use the Desert Road. (Current pricing is EGP26) Alternate services (West Delta and Nile Delta) use the Agricultural Road and have longer journey times and slightly cheaper prices. TaxiTaxis are plentiful in every town. You can stop them in the street (they stop anywhere - no matter the traffic conditions). Condition of taxis in Alexandria varies from ramshackle to downright dangerous.
