Papyrus Questions

Do I need special lighting?
How do I clean my papyrus painting?
How do I frame my papyrus painting
What is frame matting?
How do I repair a tear/my papyrus is seperating into strands?

Papyrus answers

Q. Do I need special lighting?
A. Your papyrus painting is best viewed in natural light, but should not be exposed to prolonged direct sunlight.

Many picture framers provide an excellent frame with attached light for when you wish to highlight your painting in the evening. If you have difficulty finding one of these, we can supply.

Q. How do I keep a papyrus painting clean?
A. We recommend that you have your painting framed to prevent dust and other airborne contamination coming in direct contact. Most commercial window cleaners are good for cleaning framing glass.
Avoid all-purpose cleaners, disinfectants, or any cleaner that contains pumice, waxes, or harsh detergents.
If your frame contains conservation glass, you should avoid using anything with ammonia (note that several common commercial glass cleaners do contain ammonia).
Window cleaners with vinegar or vinegar-D work well, and tests indicate that they are safe for any glass.

On unframed papyrus, dust once a week to keep the colours vibrant and the base papyrus clean. stroke from the centre of the painting to the edges without lifting the duster. Follow the grain of the papyrus layer you are cleaning (side to side or top to bottom). Do not apply unecessary pressure. Do not wash, you will only ingrain the dust into the papyrus fibres.

Q. How do I frame my papyrus painting?
A. 1. Use a frame that is a mimimum of one inch larger than your painting to allow for expansion in warm weather/warm rooms.
2. Lay the frame face down on a cushioned surface.
3. Glass, acrylic or conservation glass can be used as the display surface, insert a minimum of one layer of black (or another colour of your choice) matting.
4. Lay the papyrus centrally onto the matting so that there is a minimum half inch overlap on each edge.
5. Add a backing layer of matting, then attach the frame back and secure in position.

Q. What is frame matting?
A. Frame matting is a cushioning card used to provide and maintain seperation between the surface of your painting and the display frame glass, and also between the back of your papyrus and the frame back.

These prevent your painting/payrus becoming damaged by sticking to the components of your frame.

Q. How do I repair a tear/my papyrus painting is seperating into strands?
A. One of the effects of direct sunlight or wetting when cleaning an unframed papyrus is that the natural adhesion of the strands may break down. There are two accepted methods of repair.

1. To copy the original adhesion method, cut a potato (or other starchy vegetable) in half and rub the mating papyrus surfaces with the cut face of the potato to transfer the natural starch, lay the papyrus flat between two tea towels, place a heavy item over the join, and leave to dry for a minimum of 24 hours.

2. Quick and dirty - Apply a small amount of adhesive paste or paper glue, lay the papyrus flat, and leave to dry.

Perfume bottle questions

How thick is the glass?
How do I clean my perfume bottles?
Can I buy spare stopper/applicators?
What are the applicators made from?
How do I repair a broken applicator?

Perfume bottle answers

Q. How thick is the glass?
A. This varies from one bottle to the next, but in general, Liz and I would describe the glass as thin. The bottles are fragile and need to be handled accordingly. We have knocked bottles over in the storeroom several times, and so far none of the bottles have broken (touch wood), but we still exercise caution when we handle them.

Q. How do I clean my perfume bottles?
A. To clean the inside of the bottle, immerse and agitate gently in warm, but not hot water. Use a mild detergent or non-abrasive glass cleaner.
Avoid all-purpose cleaners, disinfectants, or any cleaner that contains pumice, waxes, or harsh detergents. We also do not recommend use of a vinegar or vinegar-D cleaner as this may affect the scent of the next fill of perfume.

To clean the outside of the bottle, we recommend light dusting once a week. The bottle should be held firmly with one hand while being dusted. Do not apply unecessary pressure. If required to remove a stain from the outside (face cream perhaps - it seems to get everywhere), rub gently with a damp, but not wet, cloth and pat dry immediately with absorbent tissue to stop dust from being ingrained in the etching or gold leaf designs.

Q. Can I buy spare stopper/applicators?
A. Yes, we can supply spare or replacement applicators at a cost of 50 pence each plus postage. Please contact us by email to discuss arrangements.
We can guarantee the fit of the replacement stopper, but we cannot guarantee it will be the same design as the one original supplied with your bottle. This is dependant on what the factory has available at the time of your request. We will do our best to obtain a match.

Q. What are the applicators made from?
A. Depending on the design, the applicator may be a solid glass rod, or a hollow glass tube, fused onto the ground glass stopper. This stopper in turn, is fused to the patterned gripper.

Q. How do I repair a broken applicator?
A. It is usually the solid rod/hollow tube applicator that breaks, sometimes leaving a sharp edge.

WE CANNOT RECOMMEND THAT YOU ATTEMPT REPAIR, but offer this advice to reduce your risk of injury if you do. Please exercise extreme caution when you make the decision to repair and/or continue with use.

1. Use a fine (120 grit) sandpaper wrapped around a small sanding block (an emery board can substitute).

2. With the sandpaper firmly held on a flat surface in front of you, hold the applicator upright and gently stroke the broken applicator edge against the sandpaper, making sure each stroke is made away from, not toward your body.

3. After every 50 or so strokes, visually examine the end of the applicator.

4. Only continue to use the applicator if you are 100% satisfied that the end is smooth and does not present a risk of personal injury.

We do not recommend that you do this and can not accept responsibility for your actions if you do.

WE RECOMMEND that you approach a professional used to handling glass (perhaps the local glazing firm) and ask them if they are able to make the item safe for use - as a stopper ONLY.

Replica figure questions

How are the figures made?
How do I clean my replica figure?
How can I repair my replica figure?

Replica figure answers

Q. How are the figures made?
A. Each figure is molded using the "Cold Cast Resin" technique. A two part polymer resin is mixed in exactly the right proportions (the secret ingredient in our process), poured into the mold, agitated to ensure the mold is completely filled and to remove trapped air bubbles, then left to set.
The advantage of this technique is a denser figure, less prone to breakage, and of a uniform colour.

Q. How do I clean my replica figure?
A. A once per week light dusting is sufficent to keep these figures in original condition.

If you must wash the figure, use only a mild detergent in lukewarm water and immediately pat dry with absorbent tissue.

Q. How do I repair my replica figure?
A. If you are unfortunate enough to chip, or break off, any part of your replica figure, it can be safely repaired using a two part epoxy glue.

Select your own choice of epoxy glue and follow the manufacturer's instructions closely.

Ocassionally, it may be necessary to pre-wet the joint area to seal the surface and stop the glue being absorbed before it gets a chance to do its job.

Shipping questions and answers

We have been asked why we ship direct from Egypt instead of holding stock in the UK/USA etc.

The dry heat of Egypt provides the perfect storage conditions for our papyrus paintings. Suppliers who hold their stock in a temperate climate such as the UK and much of the USA, run the risk of damaged stock due to humidity. Their alternative to selling a damaged product is to incur extra costs in maintaining a suitable storage environment.

The shipping costs you incur on direct shipment from Egypt would be passed on to you in higher base pricing if we did pre-ship stock to a central holding point. For our US customers, this would be a double charge. Our shipping costs (and charges) to the UK and USA from Egypt are identical.

Our Far East and Australasian customers benefit from direct shipping too. It is obvoiusly cheaper to ship direct to them from Egypt, than it is to ship first to UK, then back from the UK through the Middle East to Hong Kong, Singapore, Philippines, Thailand, China, Australia and New Zealand.

We have our own warehouse in Egypt, we have direct control of our stock and are able to deal much more efficiently with Egyptian manufacturers, artisans and artists when there is no International transport involved in handling the (very infrequent) quality control issues that do arise.
